About

I’m Jem, that Kiwi hiker girl. You know, the one who spends her free days up in the bush, the one who would rather spend time solitary than with company, the one who prefers outdoors to walls. Yep, that one. Hiking is my happy place, it is where I find peace and serenity.

As a solo female hiker, I want to dispel the myth that hiking alone is scary and dangerous. It really isn’t, as long as you have the proper skills, knowledge and gear you should be as right as rain. It is empowering and soul enriching. Not scary and dangerous. There is nothing better than being surrounded by Mother Nature and all her glory. She didn’t put in all that hard work creating such a beautiful place for us to sit inside and not make the most of it.

On the blog

On this blog you can find more about hiking, tips + tricks to help you make the most of your hike, hiking guides, camping, New Zealand Guides and Overseas Guides.

My aim is to inspire others to get outside and discover the benefits of hiking and the outdoors has for themselves, whether they are are a complete beginner or of the more experienced variety. You just need to have a little knowhow. That’s where I come in with my cape. Well, my hiking pack, let’s face it, there’s no room for a cape back there.

Traveling is also something that I thoroughly enjoy. I love experiencing different cultures, learning about the world we live in and the people who inhabit it. Questioning the world we live in and observing people helps us not only learn about ourselves but learn about life in general.

Why should you stick around?

I want to INSPIRE you to get outside and explore your patch of the world. To help you out I have created lots of tips + tricks so whether you are a first time nature explorer or more experienced, there is something for everyone.

Wednesdays: destination day where a hike or a destination is featured. As I am currently doing a 52 hikes in 52 weeks challenge, many of these hikes will be featured. Included are half-day hikes, day hikes and  multi-day hikes

Saturdays: tips + tricks day,  whether you are a beginner or advanced, you are sure to find something suitable. From beginner hiking tips to what to pack in your day pack to how to hike solo safely to hiking in summer and everything in between. Keep an eye out for monthly gear reviews

If you feel a little overwhelmed and don’t know what to do before your first hike I have you covered. That Hiking Checklist has a list of everything you need to chuck in your hiking bag, what actions you need to take before a hike and what to remember while you are hiking. Want it? A little bit about me

I tend to see the world a different way to most people and am often described as quirky, unique or weird. That’s ok though, everyone is weird, they just show it in varying degrees. Plus who wants to be the same as everybody else? If we were all the same the world would be a very dull place. The world needs a bit of fun and a bit of unique in it. We are only here for a short while so we may as well have some fun along the way.

I love being outdoors, walking, exploring, camping and finding adventures. I am a creature of habit, I also get bored if I do the same thing every day. I like spontaneity, I also enjoy routine. A complete contrast of characters, I am a girl and we are difficult creatures to decipher.

Feel free to drop me a message to say hi, I love hearing from people from all walks of life.

Jem
